On 3 October, Joaquín Marzano, a PhD student from the Physical Education and Sports Department at the University of Valencia, Spain, presented his research project, which is part of a collaboration between the International Tennis Federation, the University of Valencia, and SpertLab.

Joaquín's research evaluates the accuracy and reliability of GPS and UWB technology for tracking spatiotemporal variables in tennis. He will conduct his research internship at SpertLab until December, working on how these technologies can enhance performance analysis and practice design in tennis.

Duarte Araújo co-authored an article about modeling visually guided interceptive actions, published in Algorithms. Read here: https://doi.org/ 10.3390/a17070277.

This approach to human action modeling, links physics with psychology, and translates perception-action theories into algorithms. It enables accurate real-time interception explanations, with applications in domains such as neurorehabilitation and virtual reality systems.

SpertLab was visited by Pavel Koppman

Between 14 and 18 October, SpertLab was visited by Pavel Koppman, CEO of Developing Athletics Software (DAS). This company specializes in creating virtual reality systems to enhance athletes’ decision-making and perceptual-motor skills. DAS focuses on improving technical-tactical analysis in team sports and fostering more dynamic coach-athlete communication.

On 14 October, Pavel introduced the virtual reality system Apollo. This innovative system promises to transform how athletes and coaches approach training and performance analysis by simulating real-game scenarios in a virtual environment.
Duarte Araújo co-authored a commentary about wayfinding, exploring it as a dynamic, reciprocal process of perception and action distributed across the organism and environment, published in Psychological Research.

This approach contrasts with conventional theories of human behavior, which often emphasize an organism-centered perspective. The commentary was directed to Bock et al. (2024), who argued that wayfinding decisions are bounded, independent, and semi-autonomous, based on generalized cognitive and strategy-specific processes. Woods, Araújo, and Davids highlighted how humans actively navigate their environments through direct perception based on affordances.

Cristiano Barreira joined a SpertLab meeting

On 20 September, Cristiano Barreira, professor at Escola de Educação Física e Esporte de Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, joined a SpertLab meeting to discuss his ongoing research. Cristiano presented his work on violence and psychological development in combat sports, highlighting his intercontinental investigation about boundary experiences shaping the psychology of martial arts and combat practices.

SpertLab welcomes Paulo Tibério Saveca

Between 17 and 29 September, Paulo Tibério Saveca, professor at Escola Superior de Ciências do Desporto, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique, visited SpertLab to begin his postdoctoral research. Under the guidance of Professor Duarte Araújo, Paulo's research will focus on psychological training and mental health of high-performance athletes in Mozambique.

During his visit, Paulo participated in a SpertLab meeting on 19 September, where he contributed to scientific discussions, exploring ways to develop psychological preparedness for competition.

Duarte Araújo, director of Spertlab and coordinator of Ciper, was recently awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Movement & Skill Acquisition 2024 by EMERGENCE.
EMERGENCE is a USA company focused on assisting sport coaches and practitioners in guiding their athletes to enhanced skill acquisition and training transfer.
This award recognizes his vast scientific and applied work in the field of perceptual-motor learning in sport, which has had a great international impact on his peers and on the training of new researchers over the last twenty years.
Congratulations!

David Farrokh visits Spertlab

Between 17 and 19 of June, David Farrokh, from Sheffield Hallam University, UK, visited spertlab. His research focuses on explaining flow using the ecological dynamics approach by measuring multi-scale dynamics in 1vs1 in football.

David discussed how the ecological dynamics framework offers an alternative account to flow based on the dynamics of contextual interactions captured through eco-physical variables.

New book chapter "Networks Centrality"!

Duarte Araújo and Pedro Passos co-authored a book chapter about social network analysis in football, its complex systems background, and different applications to capture the cooperative and competitive dynamics of collective behavior in sports. This chapter is part of the textbook "Computer Science in Sport: Modeling, Simulation, Data Analysis and Visualization of Sports-Related Data," edited by Daniel Memmert. See here: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-662-68313-2.
