Daniel Carrilho, Henrique Lopes, and Duarte Araújo co-authored an article on how team cognition and coordinated action can be understood as an integrated process in team sports, published in Sports Medicine – Open.
The article, “Team Cognizant Action: Insights into Developing Team Synergies in Sports”, introduces the concept of team cognizant action, proposing that team cognition is not separate from action but is expressed through the continuous perception–action couplings between players and their performance environment.
From an ecological dynamics perspective, players coordinate by perceiving shared opportunities for action and adapting their movements to one another. These interactions support the emergence of team synergies, allowing the team to function as a coordinated unit while pursuing shared performance goals.
The article also highlights implications for practice design, suggesting that training should preserve key information–movement couplings from competition to develop shared perceptual attunement and collective movement calibration.
